What Is Psychotherapy?

In its essence, Psychotherapy is the care of the soul. It is a safe space in which you get to shine a light into your own dark corners or overstuffed closets, as it were, with a trained professional there alongside you, offering support through a variety of 'tools' that you can try out. Spiritual Psychotherapy is a holistic, integrated, eclectic approach to seeing you as a spiritual being on human journey, and seeing you as whole, not broken.

Psychotherapy relies on developing a therapeutic relationship between you and the therapist because this is what creates the safe space in which you can explore the various parts of your self and your life.  Psychotherapy is about getting to know yourself more fully in the presense of someone else.  A psychotherapist employs many techniques or 'tools' to help you navigate challenging thoughts, feelings or behaviours.  In the image above, I am facilitaing Havening Techniques®, one of the modalities I offer.

What Does Psychotherapy Do?

Psychotherapy helps you address challenges.

My goal as a psychotherapist, is that you feel seen and heard.  This can sometimes feel raw, especially if you have not felt seen nor heard for much of your life.  And it also can feel incredibly freeing, liberating.  And in this new space, it becomes more possible for you to make sense of things, to feel lighter, to have more resiliance. Psychotherapy allows an individual, family, or couple, children, youth, adults, and elders, to talk openly and confidentially about their concerns and feelings with a trained professional.

Somatic, Body-Oriented Modalities:

Guided Drawing for Healing Trauma®

Guided Drawing for Healing Trauma® is a somatic, body-oriented Art Therapy approach that engages the body-mind through movement, which allows very personal, unique wisdom to surface.  And with this inner wisdom, clients can feel a shift in how they relate to themselves or their story, and they come away from the experience with increased clarity and confidence in how to manage their situation or move through their trauma.

Havening Techniques®

The Havening Techniques®, which utilizes current neuroscience, can help with many issues, including distressing memories, trauma, fear and pain. Havening is a psycho-sensory technique which uses the sensory input of touch, imagination, and attention to create lasting change.

Two-Track or Two-Chair

The Two-Track technique can be helpful in coming to greater clarity around a decision or option as this tool allows one to feel into the body's reaction to various imagined scenarios, thus feeling more confidence in a direction. It's an opportunity to use both the head and the gut in decision-making.

Two-Chair can be helpful in feeling into someone else's perspective, providing more understanding so that you can navigate a situation feeling more grounded and confident.

Grounding & Shielding

Grounding is so important in our overwhelming, busy, often disjoined lives! Grounding is a way to get back into your body, anchor yourself, and feel so deeply connected that you embody that stability as you move through your day.  Shielding is about creating intention and personal authority around yourself, your personal bubble. Sheilding is about clarifying the boundaries of what you'll allow to impact you or not. Sheilding isn't about walling yourself off from the world, it's about strengthening yourself to better manage the ups and downs of life as it unfolds.

Embodied Focusing

Have you ever found yourself over-thinking, ruminating, stewing in thoughts, catastrophizing, over-analysing?  Focusing invites you into your body as a way to access emotions, rather than being too ‘in your head’. This practice helps you become more grounded and anchored in your physical experience, which gives you more information to go on, not just the spinning thoughts.

Parts Work:

Sub-Personality Dialoguing

A powerful and non-judgmental method for guiding people towards a better understanding of their inner urges and motives. Conversation is facilitated on paper with both left-hand & right-hand, so that both the 'adult' and the 'sub-personality' of the client can begin to understand each other better.  This leads to more self-acceptance, freedom of choice and the expansion of the behavioural repertoire.

Inner Child Work

'Inner Child' is simply a handy metaphor for working with our emotional body, using various tools to access buried emotions and connect with current feelings. It can feel powerfully healing to interact with ourselves this way.

Inner Critic Work

Learning to recognize the voice of your Inner Critic, to ease or stop negative self-talk, and to learn to work together rather than feeling frustrated by it. Our Inner Critic is here to help us....we just need to communicate how we'd like their help!

Inside Out - Emotions as Parts

Some of you may have seen the movie Inside Out (Disney 2015 & 2024). It's a delightful animation of how our emotions often manage us! While working with Emotions isn't a modality officially called 'Inside Out', it's a great description. Dialoguing or 'sitting with' an emotion can help bring our invisible, inner world out infront of us, creating understanding & self-compassion.

Spiritual Modalities

Transpersonal Psychotherapy

Transpersonal psychotherapy, or spiritual psychotherapy, integrates the spiritual and transcendent aspects of the human experience within the framework of modern psychotherapy. We are so much more than just our physical body....

Mindfulness & Presence

We are so fortunate that Mindfulness is now being talked about and taught in so many places. Mindfulness brings us deeper into the experience of life, rather than the existing of life. Mindful practices allow us to be present, to really show up to a task or an interaction, and showing up increases our sense of satisfaction and fullfilment in life.

Symbolic Sight

Psychotherapy is anchored in metaphor, symbolic meaning and archetyal influences. Often, we'll naturally 'make meaning' out of something like a repeated word or number, a specific coincidence or a 'sign' that appears. This is a solid, viable source of insight, the more specific to you, the more meaningful and helpful along your way.

Guided Imagery

Accessing through your imagination underlying beliefs, personal myths, subconscious connections and inner truths to guide you along your journey of healing.
